About Us

Welcome to That Sweet Tea Life!

Hello and welcome! I’m Ryan Cunningham, the heart and soul behind That Sweet Tea Life. This blog is more than just a platform; it’s a celebration of passion for crafting, DIY projects, furniture painting, and the art of delicious recipes.

Our Journey: From Paintbrushes to Keyboards

With over 20 years of experience in the painting business with support of my loving wife Kelly, and as a father of seven, I’ve learned the art of balancing professionalism with personal touch. My journey began in the hustle of new construction painting, where I quickly discovered my love for detailed, high-end projects. This pursuit of excellence led to a significant milestone in 2009 when a luxury home I worked on swept awards in the Midwest Luxury Home Tour, clinching titles for best interior, exterior, kitchen, and bathroom.

The 2010 housing market crash turned a new page in my career, shifting my focus from new homes to the art of refinishing kitchen cabinets and painting furniture. This transition wasn’t just a change in business—it was a rediscovery of my passion for slowing down and pouring creativity into every stroke.

Crafting Over 200 Stories

To date, I have transformed over 200 sets of cabinets, each with a unique finish, and worked on furniture pieces ranging from private clients to high-end hotels in the Minneapolis area. But what truly drives me is not the quantity, but the quality and creativity infused in each project.

Embracing the Imperfections

At That Sweet Tea Life, we believe in embracing the imperfect journey of creativity. Sometimes, this means a project might not be profitable or might not turn out as expected (I admit, color selection is not my strongest suit). But the joy lies in the process, in the learning, and in the sheer pleasure of creating.

Our Team

At That Sweet Tea Life, we understand that diversity is the spice of life and the soul of creativity. Recognizing my own limitations (color palettes for example!), I’ve brought together a vibrant team of writers, each with their own unique flair and expertise. Our team is a tapestry of talent, ranging from seasoned DIY enthusiasts to skilled crafters to culinary wizards. They bring a wealth of knowledge, diverse perspectives, and a shared passion for turning the ordinary into extraordinary.

Each member of our team is carefully selected for their expertise and their ability to communicate complex ideas in a relatable way. Whether it’s choosing the perfect shade of blue for a beach-themed room or finding the right varnish for a vintage dresser, our writers provide insights grounded in experience and a love for the craft.

What Our Readers Say

Awesome information! I was about to wax seal my project but think I will opt for a varnish for the longevity and the fact it won’t yellow!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

-Louise Shaikh

Thank you for your thorough explanation of the differences between acrylic and latex paint. I knew there was a difference but couldn’t remember exactly what… Thanks again! I am bookmarking this piece for later reference.
